Marcion’s Song

(OR, WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE'S THE WORD OF GOD BUT WE DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO MOST OF IT)

The Bible is the Word of God

That's what people tell me every day

But the first three quarters was a big mistake

Yeah, the Old Testament is a "throw-away"

CHORUS: Yeah, it seems God didn't know what He was doing

For a hundred thousand million billion years or so

But He fixed it with the New Testament

And got rid of the stuff we don't need no mo'

Well the rough draft was just a lot of rules

And a bunch of long boring genealogies

And they sacrificed this and they sacrificed that

Just to buy off a God they couldn't please

(Chorus)

Well, it seems God couldn't keep His temper

He'd smite'm with His great big baseball bat

But a couple thousand years ago God got saved

And He's real nice now I can tell you that

(Chorus)

TALK: OK, somebody give me a New Testament

Let's see--Matthew--uh, oh, it begins with a genealogy

Let's flip a few more pages--

"You have heard it said, but I tell you now. . ."

You mean there's rules in this thing?

Let's try Paul. . .

"Those who practice such things

shall not inherit the Kingdom of God"

Wait a second; I thought Paul was all grace!

Let's go to the back

Wait a second; what are Psalms and Proverbs doing here?

Revelation--

Huh? God doesn't look real nice here. . .

Did this book get put into the wrong Testament?

Maybe we can do a trade: Revelation and James for Psalms and Proverbs

Maybe God needs a third edition

(Chorus)
